At NXT TakeOver: WarGames 2020, Johnny Gargano defeated Leon Ruff and Damian Priest to win the NXT North American Title with the help of Austin Theory and also created a record by winning the title for three times.

Johnny Gargano recently had an interview with Sportskeeda and talked about winning NXT North American title for the third time. He said that at first he was told no by WWE tryout but years later he created the history by winning the title three times, held five nt Titles and have been on more TakeOvers than anyone else.
“It means the world, man… I was told no by WWE tryout. I was told there was no place for me in NXT. To now be here years later and to be not only the first triple crown champion in NXT history, not only the first two time North American Champion but the first three time North American Champion, uh, I’ve held five titles now in NXT, won more awards than anyone, been on more TakeOvers than anyone, it’s pretty wild. It really is kind of, uh, a Cinderella story of being told no, and using it as ways to fuel you. And that’s just kind of who I am.”
In his five years with WWE, Johnny Gargano has accomplished almost everything in NXT and the won big matches he got. Then, he was asked about anything left to achieve in NXT. Then, Gargano said that he felt like one thing he haven’t done yet is to have a legitimate title run. Now, he got that chance and it was the one goal in his mind right now.
“I feel like the one thing that I haven’t done yet is had a legitimate title run. Uh, for me being the underdog, kind of the underdog wrestling character, I was always more about the chase than the actual title and then the holding it and defending it. So now I feel like that’s the one blemish on my legacy is not being able to hold a title, not being able to defend it, not being able to have a run with it. So I feel like that is the number one goal on my mind right now.”
Johnny Gargano further stated that NXT roster is filled with very talented people and all have one goal is that to take NXT where it deserves to be.
“The NXT roster is filled with very, very, very talented people who’ve been doing this for a very, very long time. And we all have one goal and that is to take NXT where it deserves to be.”
