5 new Tag Teams WWE should form this year
The tag team division in WWE currently stands in a average stage and despite the division being stacked with numerous talented duos, multiple teams don’t have the desired amount of credibility.
To their credit, WWE has handled tag-team wrestling quite nicely and things have been prominent in terms of the quality of tag team matches WWE has delivered in recent times, in comparison to a few months ago.
However, the one common problem that the company has faced for years now is the consistency in the tag team division. Over the years, numerous top teams, such as The Revival, The Ascension, and The Vaudevillains (All former NXT Tag Team Champions) failed to shine on the main roster for various reasons.
On RAW, the likes of The Street Profits and The Viking Raiders lead the division from the front, however, once again, they have fallen down the pecking order, over recent times. After all, you can’t expect much excitement in a feud over basketball matches and axe-throwing competitions.
But WWE has been trying its absolute best to restore the lost credibility in their respective tag team divisions. The red brand of RAW saw the recent addition of Seth Rollins to the tag division but also lost AOP to injury.
Whereas, things on SmackDown seem pretty stable with the likes of Miz & Morrison, The Forgotten Sons, Lucha House Party, and The New Day being in charge. However, the current tag team scenario is on an average state and lacks a lot of depth in it.
And with an overflow in the WWE’s mid-card, this might be the perfect time for the company to form a bunch of new tag teams in order to bring back the excitement that lacks in the division. With that being said, here are 5 new Tag Teams WWE should form this year.
#5 Kayden Carter and Kacy Catanzaro
Kayden Carter aka Lacey Lane is one of the highly-underrated Superstars from the present-day WWE roster. Carter had her first tryout with WWE in 2017 but was eventually signed in July 2018.
She started-off her WWE career on a high note, competing in the 2018 Mae Young Classic where she made it to the quarterfinals before losing out to Meiko Satomura. In September of 2019, Lacey Lane changed her in-ring name to Kayden Carter and finally started to make her mark on WWE NXT and on the main roster, as well.
Carter is currently part of a stacked women’s division on NXT and despite scoring wins over the likes of Chelsea Green and co., it is unlikely that she will break-out into the NXT Women’s title picture anytime soon.
Another highly-talented and athletic Superstar from the NXT Women’s Division is non-other than Kacy Catanzaro. The former American Ninja Warrior sensation is good friends with Carter, so much so, that the two have also vouched for their own show.
The two Superstars have previously teamed up on NXT house shows and will be a solid addition to the WWE Women’s Tag Team Division. If done correctly, the duo could emerge as an interesting choice of challengers for reigning WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross.
#4 Austin Theory and Murphy
It has been less than a year since Austin Theory made his WWE debut and within a short period of time, the former Evolve Champion has competed in his first WrestleMania and has already shared the ring with the likes of Aleister Black, Akira Tozawa and Roderick Strong.
Speaking of WrestleMania 36, Theory walked in as a replacement for the injured Andrade at ‘The Grandest Stage of Them All’ and teamed up with Angel Garza, as the pairing unsuccessfully challenged The Street Profits for the RAW Tag Team Championships.
Shortly afterward, Theory was officially inducted into Zelina Vega’s faction on RAW, as he along with Garza and Andrade somewhat created their very own version of Los Ingobernables on Monday Night RAW.But, on a rather recent edition of RAW, Theory was kicked out of the faction after costing Andrade and Garza a tag team match against Apollo Crews and Kevin Owens.
And, later on in the night, he would go on to assist Seth Rollins and Murphy in attacking Black and formally joining Rollins’ faction instead.
With the exclusion of Rezar and Akam from Rollins’ faction, Theory could turn out to be the perfect replacement that Rollins has been looking for, and now that ‘The Messiah’ finally has a new disciple, he could shift his focus back on the singles division with Murphy and Theory joining forces as the newest tag team on the red brand.
Of course, in the past, Rollins and Murphy did win the RAW Tag Team Titles but Theory would definitely be the ideal replacement for the former Universal Champion in RAW’s tag team division.
#3 Killian Dain and Cameron Grimes
There is no doubt in the fact that both Killian Dain and Cameron Grimes are highly-talented singles Superstars. Since their arrival on NXT, both men have competed against some of the finest names from WWE NXT has to offer.
However, currently, there isn’t much the two Superstars could achieve in the NXT Men’s Division. With the mid-card filled with the likes of Dominick Dijakovic, Damian Priest, Finn Balor, Johnny Gargano, Matt Riddle, Timothy Thatcher, and reigning NXT North American Champion, Keith Lee, I think its safe to say that the two men will end up getting lost in the shuffle in the mid-card division.
With the NXT title picture currently consisting of Adam Cole, The Velveteen Dream, and Dexter Lumis, there isn’t much that Grimes and Dain could achieve there, as well. Hence, forming a tag team with the two tremendously talented heels could be the ideal solution.
After all, how often do you see a cruiserweight and 6 ft tall Superstar come together to form a tag team? For now, forming a tag team could add a lot of interesting depth to NXT’s Tag Team Division and the pairing of Grimes and Dain could eventually help them in the singles division.
#2 Dana Brooke and Lacey Evans
Both Dana Brooke and Lacey Evans have had quite a similar run in WWE so far. The two ladies started-out as heels and went on to establish their place as lovable babyfaces. Especially, Lacey Evans, who surprisingly enough, has been quite over with the WWE Universe as a face, after starting-off as one of the most-hated and talented heels on the main roster.
Brooke and Evans are yet to taste gold in the singles division, but given their incredible amount of in-ring talent, the two ladies certainly deserve to win a title on the main roster. As for ‘The Southern Sassy Belle’, Evans was unsuccessful in her attempt of winning the SmackDown Women’s Championship in the early stages of 2020, and much like Dana Brooke, she was also unable to win the Women’s Money in the Bank briefcase.
With the WWE Women’s Division in need of fresh tag teams, the duo of Dana Brooke and Lacey Evans could be a solid pair of challengers for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships and if you ask me, I personally wouldn’t mind them seeing leading the Women’s Tag Division from the front.
#1 Daniel Bryan and Shorty G (Chad Gable)
Daniel Bryan is undoubtedly one of the finest singles wrestlers in WWE today and the former WWE Champion is currently on course to becoming a two-time WWE Intercontinental Champion.
In his quest to become a two-time IC Champion, Bryan defeated his former tag-team partner Drew Gulak in the first round of the on-going Intercontinental Championship Tournament. Within a few hours of his win over the former WWE Cruiserweight Champion, it was reported that Gulak had marked his departure from WWE.
With Bryan currently left without a tag team partner, fans would believe that it is finally time for ‘American Dragon’ to make his full-fledged return to the singles division. However, the formation of a tag team against Shorty G isn’t the worst idea, as well.
The former Chad Gable, had previously teased the potential formation of a trio with Bryan and Gulak but with the sudden exit of the latter, maybe Bryan could take the former SmackDown Tag Team Champion under his wing and start working with him as a tag team.
Shorty G hasn’t been doing much for himself on the blue brand of SmackDown and pairing up with Bryan would certainly benefit the former a lot. Maybe Shorty G could end up winning the SmackDown Tag Championship once again, this time with Bryan by his side.
