The 1997’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view is the 10th annual Royal Rumble PPV and it took place on January 19th, 1997 at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas with attendance of 60,477. Total of nine matches took place at the event including two dark matches and one match took place prior to the pay-per-view.
Storylines Behind The Matches
The main event of the show was between the Shawn Micheals and Sycho Sid for WWF World Heavyweight title. At In Your House 11 show, Sycho Sid defeated Vader and earned the WWF World Heavyweight Championship opportunity at Survivor Series 1996. During their match at Survivor Series, Sid distracted Shawn Micheals by attacked his manager, Jose Lothario. Then, Sid took that as advantage and hits Micheals with camera, then, hits powerbomb to win the WWF Title. Later, Shawn Micheals got his rematch at Royal Rumble 1997.
The Intercontinental Match between the challenger Goldust and Champion Hunter Hearst Helmsley. This feud is revolved around the Goldust’s manager Marlena. During the In Your House Show 12, Hunter tried to seduce Marlena, then Goldust attacked him following weeks. During the match between Goldust and Jerry Lawler on December 30th, 1996 episode of Raw, Hunter involved and tried to carry away Marlena. Then, Marc Mero, who dropped WWF Intercontinental Title to Hemsley, stopped him but Goldust lost the match via count out. That leads to setup the match between the Goldust and Hunter.
The feud between The Undertaker and Vader didn’t have much buildup. This was started with Vader attacking The Undertaker several times along with other heels. At that time, Undertaker was involved in feud with Paul Bearer, who turned on Undertaker. On Jan 5th, 1997 episode of Raw, Undertaker attacked Vader’s manager and that leads match between them at 1997 Royal Rumble and Paul Bearer stood at side of Vader.
Other matches includes, 30-Men traditional Royal Rumble match, Ahmed Johnson vs. Faarooq and six man tag team match between Canek, Hector Garza & Perro Aguayo vs. Fuerza Guerrera, Heavy Metal & Jerry Estrada.

• Hunter Hearst Helmsley (c) (with Mr. Hughes) defeated Goldust (with Marlena) – WWF Intercontinental Championship Match
• Ahmed Johnson defeated Faarooq (with Clarence Mason, Crush, D’Lo Brown, J.C. Ice and Wolfie D) by disqualification – Singles Match
• Vader (with Paul Bearer) defeated The Undertaker – Singles Match
• Canek, Héctor Garza and Perro Aguayo defeated Fuerza Guerrera, Heavy Metal and Jerry Estrada – Six Man Tag Team Match
• Stone Cold Steve Austin won the Royal Rumble Match by last eliminating Bret Hart and earned WWF World Heavyweight Championship opportunity at WrestleMania 13
