GUNTHER successfully defended his WWE Intercontinental championship against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 39 Night 2.
On the March 10th episode of Friday Night SmackDown a fatal five-way match was contested, where the winner would face Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 39. The match ended in a double pinfall, with Drew McIntyre and Sheamus named co-winners. It was then announced that the two would face each other the following week to determine the definitive number one contender.
However, that match ended in a no-contest after Imperium (Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser, and Giovanni Vinci) attacked Sheamus and Drew McIntyre. WWE official Adam Pearce then decided that GUNTHER would defend his Intercontinental championship against both Drew McIntyre and Sheamus in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 39 Night 2.
At WrestleMania 39 Night 2, GUNTHER successfully retained his WWE Intercontinental championship against Drew McIntyre and Sheamus via pinfall in triple threat match. At the closing moments of the match, Drew knocks Sheamus back to the floor off the apron, then runs the ropes and hits a big dive over the top to the floor. Drew brings Sheamus back in to ring. Drew calls for the Claymore Kick now but Sheamus cuts him off with the Brogue. Drew kicks out just in time.
Sheamus and Drew slowly recover while GUNTHER is still down on the floor. Drew with a Glasgow Kiss headbutt. Sheamus with a big knee. Drew nails the Claymore out of nowhere but Sheamus kicks out. Drew and Sheamus trade shots from their knees now as fans go long. They fight to their feet and unload with big punches now, then big forearms.
Sheamus with a Brogue out of nowhere to Drew McIntyre but they both go down. Sheamus slowly rolls over to cover but GUNTHER flies off the top rope with a splash to break it up. GUNTHER powerbombs Sheamus on top of Drew McIntyre, then powerbombs Drew McIntyre for the pin to win and retain his IC Title.
