On the March 11 episode of Raw, Sami Zayn won a gauntlet match by last eliminating Chad Gable, earning the number one contender spot for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania XL. In the weeks leading up to the event, Gable trained Zayn for his championship match, which Zayn ultimately won. In gratitude for Gable’s help, Zayn offered him a title match. Before the match, however, Bronson Reed warned that he would pursue the winner.
Sami Zayn successfully defended his title against Gable, but after the match, Gable attacked Zayn while he was celebrating with his family, turning heel in the process. Later, Gable explained that he attacked Zayn because he felt disrespected when Zayn brought the title to him while he was down in the corner and because he saw Zayn celebrating with his family, something Gable couldn’t do after losing an Intercontinental Championship match in September 2023. After being attacked by Reed, Zayn defended his title against him on the April 29 episode, winning by disqualification after Gable interfered.
The following week, Zayn retaliated by attacking Gable during his match with Reed, causing another disqualification. Later that night, Zayn announced he would defend his title against both Gable and Reed in a triple threat match at King and Queen of the Ring, which was later made official.
At WWE King And Queen Of The Ring 2024, Sami Zayn defeated Bronson Reed and Chad Gable via pinfall and successfully retained his WWE Intercontinental Championship. At the closing moments, Chad Gable orders Otis to take out Sami Zayn at ringside but he refuses. Gable yells at Otis to follow his order and picks up Sami. But Otis hits Gable unexpectedly. Now, Sami and Reed in the ring and Sami hits Helluva Kick to Reed and pins him for victory.
